Livelihood...no place like home

Agriculture plays a huge part in the Thai economy; an obvious fact in a country that is known as the rice basket of the world, where the land is suitable for a variety of crops. Regrettably, poor families in distitute areas continue to live in difficulty because they don't have their own lands to cultivate. To feed their families, they have to do hard labour work that is usually very limited in their communities. As a result, they have to move to a big city to find work, with no choice but to abandon their families. Today, a large number of children are separated from their parents and live with elders or neighbours. These children are often at risk of dropping out of school to work, repeating the sad circle of poverty of their parents. The most efficient and sustainable solution is to secure food resources and provide livelihood support to the family. When parents have work then they can take care of their children to have good education and health; the family will be together. This is one of the main objectives of WV's work in the community - to ensure children grow up within the warmth and security of a family.
